The received wisdom states that if women had a real choice, released from the cultural expectation of marriage and childbearing, they would choose to have a career over marriage any day.

Women, they say, are enslaved by the drudgery implicit in the bonds of marriage and are desperate to break out and embrace the freedom and success of life as a career-woman.

But the stats in a recent poll don’t seem to back up the findings – in fact, they reveal some very surprising trends, as I discuss in this post.
